A Family Cycle in Bude – Cornwall

A Family Cycle in Bude – Cornwall

James loves to cycle, he cycles to work and back every single day and then goes out for hours at a time at the weekend. He is forever trying to get the kids and I interested in his hobby and while we do enjoy the odd cycle, we aren’t quite as enthusiastic as he seems to be. While we were on holiday in Cornwall in August we decided that we would hire some bikes and go out for a cycle around where we were staying. We hired bikes from Bude cycle hire for the morning and off we went. The cycle centre had some maps of different trails that they recommend and we opted for the canal and coast trail, we were at the seaside so we had to enjoy the sea view while we were doing it!

The canal and coast route was said to be 8km, we actually did 11km so we might have made a little detour along the way unknowingly. It is said to be a great ride for any age and any ability but there were a few tricky hills for the kids and it was quite slippy at times. I definitely wouldn’t be taking a three-year old who had just learnt to ride a bike. We opted for this route as it was mainly off the road. It was lovely and quiet on our ride, we came across a handful of other cyclists and a few dog walkers but other than that it was so peaceful (apart from Bugs moaning about being tired) and really beautiful.

Going over the canal, you can’t actually cycle along the canal path unfortunately but there is a dedicated cycle trail.

All kitted out and ready to begin.

Most of the trail was on grass and the scenery was farmland and just beautiful green open space.

It felt very tranquil… while the kids were being quiet 😉

Wait for me!!

The hills defeated Bugs a few times. To be honest this grass with the mesh underneath was slippy and quite hard to cycle on.

The hills were worth it, just look at the view.

Boo struggling up a hill.

He managed a few smiles once he made it to the top of the hill.

Gorgeous views over Widemouth Bay.

Boo and I having a bit of a rest… there’s always time for a selfie 😉

We really appreciated the shade from the trees as it was quite a hot day.

This is the recording of our cycle from my Apple watch. We did 11km in total and it took us around 1 hr 45 minutes. We would have liked to stay on the bikes for longer but the trail seemed very restrictive and we were taken back to the start. We couldn’t really complain though as it was such a glorious day we hit the beach for the afternoon.

Looks like you had a fabulous time – and what gorgeous scenery! I love those cycle rides in Cornwall – I think my favourite must be the one that ends at a cafe selling giant scones and cream tea, but it does kind of defeat the whole purpose of doing a bike ride!

I used to cycle quite a bit when I was younger, but haven’t been able to convince the kids or hubby to start again. Your post makes me think that I should probably try harder!
    Great views by the way.

How beautiful are those views. This sounds like an absolutely idyllic afternoon with the family getting out and about in nature (apart from the tired moaning kids!). Sounds like you had a wonderful time xx

Beautiful views from the top of those hills! I can imagine the slippery grass with mesh underneath is quite difficult, especially for kids. At least you got to enjoy the beach afterwards !

Amazing views! A cycle ride in Cornwall sounds like a great idea, especially it it’s not too hot. Not sure about the slippery areas though – I bet I’d be the first to take a tumble!

It looks like a beautiful neck of the woods to cycle in. And what great weather too!
